Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialised form of physiotherapy aimed at treating disorders of the inner ear which play a crucial role in balance, spatial orientation, and coordination. These include; vertigo, dizziness and decreased balance. The most common type of condition is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

A physiotherapy appointment will include a comprehensive assessment to diagnose the specific vestibular disorder then, an individualised treatment plan is designed.

Treatment may include:

  • Movements to dislodge the crystals of the inner ear and restore them to the correct location.

  • Techniques to enhance visual focus and reduce dizziness during head movements.

  • Repetitive movements that provoke symptoms to help the brain adapt and reduce sensitivity.

  • Information about the vestibular disorder, strategies to manage symptoms, and advice on lifestyle modification.

Vestibular physiotherapy is evidence-based and has been shown to be effective in managing and improving symptoms associated with vestibular disorders, helping patients regain functional independence and confidence in their daily lives.
